Pose of the Month: Easy Seat

February’s Pose of the Month is Easy Seat. And before you laugh or roll your eyes, let’s be honest: sitting on the floor is not always easy.

For a lot of bodies, Easy Seat can feel uncomfortable, awkward, or downright frustrating. Tight hips. Sensitive knees. A lower back that starts complaining almost immediately. A body that just wants to fidget.

And here’s the thing we want you to hear clearly: none of that means you’re doing it wrong.

Why we practice Easy Seat

Easy Seat shows up a lot in yoga and meditation because it’s meant to be:

  • Grounding

  • Stable

  • Supportive for breath and awareness

But it only works that way when your body feels supported. Comfort is not cheating. Comfort is what allows the nervous system to settle.

If sitting on the floor feels hard, that’s normal

Many of us spend most of our days in chairs, cars, or on couches. Asking the body to suddenly sit upright on the floor without support can feel like a lot.

If you feel strain in your hips, knees, or lower back, your body is giving you information, not failing the pose.

How to make Easy Seat actually feel easier

This is where props become your best friend.

Blankets:

  • Fold one or more blankets and sit on them to lift the hips.

  • Elevating the hips allows the knees to soften downward and reduces strain in the low back.

Bolsters:

  • Sit on a bolster if you want more height and cushioning.

  • Great for longer seated practices or meditation.

Blocks:

  • Place blocks under the knees for support if they hover or feel strained.

  • This creates stability and reduces tension in the hips.

You can mix and match. More height, more support, more comfort. There is no prize for sitting the lowest or toughest.

Easy Seat is about ease, not endurance

The goal is not to tolerate discomfort. The goal is to create a seat that allows you to:

  • Breathe comfortably

  • Sit with less effort

  • Feel grounded and supported

If that means using three props and adjusting halfway through, you’re doing yoga.

We encourage you to ask your teacher for help setting up Easy Seat or experiment with props before class starts. We are always happy to help you find what works best for your body.

This month, let Easy Seat be a reminder that simple doesn’t mean effortless, and support is part of the practice.
