The Real Side of Self-Care

Self-care gets marketed as bubble baths, candles, and somehow magically finding two quiet hours to yourself.

Real life? It's usually a lot messier than that.

Here's what I see happen all the time when people start making themselves a priority.

At first, the good stuff starts showing up. You sleep a little better. Your body doesn't ache quite as much. You have more energy. You notice you're handling stress a little differently instead of feeling like you're one inconvenience away from losing it.

But there are other things that happen too.

You have to start protecting the hour you set aside for yoga, and sometimes that means saying "no" to other people. If you're not used to that, it can feel uncomfortable.

You might even feel guilty for taking time for yourself. Like you should be doing something else that's "more productive."

And here's the one that surprises people the most...

You start realizing that being the person who always puts themselves last isn't actually who you are. It's just a habit you've gotten really good at.

None of that means yoga isn't working.

It usually means it's working exactly the way it's supposed to.

Taking care of yourself isn't always graceful. It isn't always peaceful. Sometimes it's just showing up for class when you'd rather stay on the couch because you know you'll feel better afterward.

That's the kind of self-care that changes your life.
